The Source and History of Alphabets

The history of writing can be traced back to the ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. However looking at the writings, it is clear that they were developed independently and the writing systems have a lot of variation between each other. Cuneiform and Hieroglyphs are one of the oldest writing systems developed by the Sumerians and the Egyptians. It is important to note that these two writing systems never incorporated a true alphabet. For example, identifying words were done with a lot of symbols which is quite different from the monosyllabic alphabet and this is because of the incorporation of larger range of symbols that helps them write.

However the Phoenicians indeed were the first people to thoroughly develop the first true alphabet. They are known to originate from the Mediterranean in what is now called Lebanon. It is important to note that the original Phoenician alphabets are known to consist of 22 languages of which none are vowels. The issue is that the traders in the Mediterranean are Phoenician and that is the reason why they took their alphabet with them as they were trading. Then many other cultures started developing their alphabet, modifying them to suit their own uses.

The reality is that Alphabets evolved over time and together with language, we may keep seeing modification as it goes. In business minded cities, there are translation services for those who cannot understand other languages and that are why you can see interpretation services in Dubai.
